Jurgen Grima - OrganFrom a very young age, Jurgen has shown a particular love for music and has always been fascinated by the beauty of the organ and its sounds. Today he is a self-taught organist – despite the fact that he has never attended any musical tuition.
From his learning by ear of the first musical chords at age 10, throughout the years he has managed to develop his playing abilities - both in keyboard and later in pedalling - solely on a personal basis. Through this own initiative and work Jurgen has become capable of improvising and also playing from memory many hymns, Masses and various other compositions. With the increasing love for sacred music and organ playing he has even successfully assembled his own digital organ which serves for the necessary playing and practice. |
Since 2016, Jurgen is the resident organist at Christ the King Parish in Paola, where he plays during all the main liturgical celebrations, events and Masses during the whole year. He also actively helps with the regular choir rehearsing and direction.
Previously he has played for several years at the Immaculate Conception Parish and St. Teresa of Avila Church at his hometown Cospicua, and at St. Augustine’s Parish in Valletta. Throughout the year Jurgen accompanies other local choirs and singers in various occasions – from funerals to ordinary Masses - and other liturgical functions. He also plays with Cappella Diacono in a number of feasts and celebrations.
Jurgen has also attended masterclasses with organists Dion Buhagiar, Erwin Wiersinga and Christian Schmitt during the previous editions of the Malta International Organ Festival.
